The history of Selwyn's funding

As the first Residential College to be established in Dunedin, Selwyn has earned a reputation; it is a College with a rich heritage of academic success and close community.

Whitehead

It was founded to serve the memory of Bishop Selwyn, but failed to secure an endowment in large part due to stiff competition from those wishing to establish an identically named College in Cambridge, UK. Generous personal contributions helped the College survive its first century, and started it on the journey to long-term sustainability. Selwyn continues to use resources carefully in the training of tomorrow's leaders.

The College welcomes donations from members past and present as well as friends and supporters of the College. Donations can be anonymous or recognised appropriately. Please contact the College office if you wish to donate a larger item (like a Senior Common Room) or wish to have a donation recognised (e.g. a plaque on your old room to recognise a paid refurbishment).

One-off donations

Your donations enable the College to grow, both in terms of facilities and as an academic institution. For example, $200,000 will finance a fully-endowed undergraduate scholarship; $70,000 will pay for the fitting out of a new College Bar; $10,000 will buy a bedroom refurbishment; $5,000 will purchase a portrait for the Brothers' Hall; and $100 will give the Library a new study chair.

You may prefer to arrange your donation by contacting the College Office directly, particularly if you are considering contibuting a larger sum. We are happy to discuss all donations, including the possibility of dedications. The College Office is also able to issue tax receipts for rebate purposes.

Regular Giving

If every ex-resident gave $1 per day, the College would be over $1 million better off every year. You can arrange regular giving through Paypal by clicking the button below. Alternatively, you are welcome to contact the College Office to discuss making a regular contribution.
